Employment advice

START Ability Services

One of EDS UK’s members, who is also a disabled entrepreneur, provides a Work Advice Service, which could be just what you are looking for if you need some support to get into or stay in work! Kath Sutherland is a highly experienced business and employment advisor, with over 20 years experience of providing appropriate and relevant support to disabled people who wish to remain in paid work.

Additionally, as Kath has very high support needs, she is very aware of the barriers that people face when they want to continue working despite impairments.

Who are we?

Kath established her company, START Ability Services, in 1999 to provide appropriate support and information to people accessing health and social care services. START Ability has flourished and now provides independent living services, equality and training services and, through Alan Cash, psychology services. The Work Advice Service is now also hosted by START Ability and Kath works closely with her colleague, Jane Hunt OBE, to provide the service.

Throughout our work, we follow the principles of providing practical, commonsense solutions to remove the barriers to participation caused by impairment or a long term health condition. To this end, we provide advice and support to disabled people, employers and organisations on all aspects of disability, long term health conditions and work. Indeed, all of our support is provided by disabled people and people with long term health conditions for disabled people and those with long term health conditions.

What do we do?

With many years experience, providing a national advice service for both the Association of Disabled Professionals (ADP) and the Disabled Entrepreneurs’ Network, we are widely practiced in providing an appropriate, professional service that is individually tailored to your needs. Additionally, we are able to seek support from colleagues who are willing to provide additional support and information in areas of personal expertise.

Our work advice service uses a practical, common sense approach with experienced disabled advisors to overcome difficulties in employment or self employment. We focus on providing support, advice and information to ensure that disabled people and people with long term health conditions are able to fully contribute to the workforce.

Who can we support?

As our aim is to support all disabled people to find, retain and progress in the full range of work opportunities, we would be happy to talk to you whether you are:

    • an employer
    • a representative of an organisation
    • an individual

We are able to advise on issues relating to employment and self employment, using our work with statutory, voluntary and private sector organisations, as well as individuals with long term health conditions and disabled people. This enables us to provide complete and comprehensive solutions to remove the barriers to participation.

Don’t just take our word for it!

Here are some of the comments we’ve received about our service:

“I can’t thank you enough for your help with getting back to work. Without your support, advice and guidance, I couldn’t have done this. I wish I’d come to you 18 months ago, when I first started having to have time off, as I’m sure all of this stress would have been avoided.” (Senior management professional with a mental health difficulty)

“I am so grateful for your help and support. Your advice, time and understanding of my whole situation has really helped. I am going to spend my time going through the information and feel that I can finally move my business ideas forward.” (Freelance writer with joint hypermobility syndrome)
